Salazon Chocolate Co.

I've discovered another fairly traded chocolate bar on the shelves of local stores.

Salazon Chocolate Co. is a Maryland company that specializes in salty chocolate. Two of their flavors are now in two of our local stores, The Cambridge Food Co-op and Four Seasons Health Food Store in Saratoga. 100% of their chocolate is certified by Rainforest Alliance. Buying Certified Products Is Only One Tool In Promoting Fair Exchange

If we are able, it is also important to
1) call, email,facebook, petition, etc to communicate with corporate leaders
2) find ways to support exploited workers outside the certification system without supporting unethical corporate practices
3) participate in events and activities suggested by advocacy groups
4) stay informed and monitor the promises of global food corporations

In this time of transition, wealthy corporations need to hear that it is not acceptable to abandon those they have exploited. Farmers in the Ivory Coast who have historically produced more than 40% of the cocoa to make our chocolate are in danger at this time. Earning less than $2 per day they have been unable to reinvest in soil and trees. Instead of investing in new farms in new regions, the chocolate industry owes it to those farmers to invest in rehabilitating the existing farms which have helped chocolate corporations make billions.
